WV Delegate calls HJR 21 a ‘time wasting, do nothing’ resolution
BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) – The House and Senate passed several bills on Tuesday ranging from restrictions on vape sales to restrictions on voter access.
House Joint Resolution 21 proposes an amendment to the Constitution of West Virginia to “prohibit persons not United States citizens from voting in any election held within this state”.
5 News reached out to Delegate Pushkin for a comment on the bill, who said “West Virginia Law already prohibits non US citizens from voting in West Virginia elections. This is yet another time wasting, do nothing, resolution offered by the majority. If they want to go to the time, trouble, and expense of of doing this, they should put reproductive freedom on the ballot and let West Virginian’s vote on that”.
According to USA.gov, an official website of the United States Government, you can only vote in federal, state, and local elections if you meet 4 requirements:
- Are a U.S. citizen (some areas allow non-citizens to vote in local elections only)
- Meet your state’s residency requirements
- Are 18 years old on or before Election Day
- In almost every state, you can register to vote before you turn 18 if you will be 18 by Election Day.
- Are registered to vote by your state’s voter registration deadline. North Dakota does not require voter registration.
5 News also reached out to Delegate Scot Heckert, a supporter of the legislation, but did not receive a comment as of Friday, February 9th.
