Common Alexander Welch Reynolds (April 26, 1816-Could 26, 1876) was born in Lewisburg. He served within the armies of america, the Accomplice States, and in Egypt. He was a grandson of Frances Hunter Lawrence Arbuckle Welch (second spouse of Captain Matthew Arbuckle, who served on the Battle of Level Nice) and Alexander Welch, pioneer surveyor.
A graduate of the U.S. Navy Academy at West Level in 1838, Reynolds served as an officer within the military within the Seminole Battle, the Mexican Battle, and within the west. On the outbreak of the Civil Battle he entered the Accomplice military as a colonel. With appreciable fight expertise, together with command of the fiftieth Regiment of Virginia Infantry on the Battle of Carnifex Ferry (after which he was referred to as ‘‘Outdated Gauley’’ for the river on whose banks the battle was fought), he rose to the rank of brigadier common.
After the struggle, on the advice of fellow West Virginian and Accomplice common, John McCausland, Reynolds accepted a fee as colonel within the forces of the khedive of Egypt, the ruler of Egypt underneath the Ottoman Empire. Reynolds served in Egypt in numerous posts, together with adjutant common, from 1870 till his demise. Though there’s a memorial to him within the Outdated Stone Presbyterian Church cemetery in Lewisburg, Common Reynolds was buried in Egypt.
