West Virginia Open Kicks Off
WHEELING — The Bordas & Bordas West Virginia Open started it’s first of four days of competition on Thursday, with singles and doubles matches occupying the courts within the Oglebay Tennis Center, and $5,000 in prize money on the line.
In the event’s first match, Austin Douglass defeated Levi Ekanem, 6-4 6-4, in a singles match.
In mixed 50 and over doubles, John Kejas and Carla Babe defeated Robert Stough and Linda Stough, 6-0 6-0, while Bill Gallagher and Maggie Allison defeated Sean Coughlan and Julie Joseph, 7-5 5-7 6-1.
There are 12 different age-level divisions at the Open.
In the men’s 45 and over singles division, Charles Wylie defeated Michael Marinus Young via a walkover, Brian Sherry defeated Brett Andrews 6-4 6-1, Gerry Bohner defeated Kenneth Dearth 6-1 6-2, George Voloch defeated Joseph White 6-7(6) 6-1 6-4, Nick Carr defeated Diego Gattesco 6-2 6-1, and Jeffrey Gardner defeated Joe Bertagna 6-0 6-0.
In the women’s 60 and over doubles, Saun Capehart and Georgeann Mercer defeated Judith Mayles and Lynn Buch 6-4 6-4.
Matches continue all day Friday. The Bordas & Bordas West Virginia Open is hosted by the Wheeling Oglebay Tennis Club.
