SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Those who assisted in the investigation into the tragic death of Sgt. Cory Maynard were recognized by the West Virginia State Police Thursday in South Charleston.
The West Virginia State Police said they had already sent out many thank you cards to individuals and groups of people, but there were three organizations in particular they decided to honor in person.
Representatives from Mingo Central High School, Evans Funeral Home and Beech Creek Volunteer Fire Department were invited to the West Virginia State Police Headquarters to receive a plaque and be recognized for their contributions and support made last month following Sgt. Maynard’s death.
Sgt. Maynard was killed on June 2 in Mingo County while responding to a shooting. Sgt. Maynard’s memorial service was held at Mingo Central High School on June 7. Principal Marcella Charles-Casto said they were honored was a way for the school to give back to the troopers who protect the school each day.
“This was such a tragic event, and today was an honor for our school,” said Charles-Casto. “This opportunity was good for us because we finally got to give something back to the officers.”
Each organization received two plaques from the State Police with one containing Sgt. Maynard’s signature.
Cpt. Losh with the West Virginia State Police said they wanted to recognize those grieving with them in the community for their help during this rough time.
“It’s an officer in their community, and they take that personal,” Cpt. Losh said. “You can tell by how they helped out way above and beyond what’s expected.”
