CHARLESTON, W.Va. — State lawmakers return to Charleston Sunday to begin three days of interim committee meetings at the state capitol.

Gov. Jim Justice

There are just more than two dozen meetings scheduled through Tuesday. There is no special session scheduled in connection with meetings.

Gov. Jim Justice has said a number of times this summer that he planned to call lawmakers into special session in August or September on a number of issues including his proposal to reduce the state’s personal income tax by another 5%. It doesn’t appear the proposal has gained the necessary support thus far.

It would be difficult to have a special session alongside interim committee meetings set for September since they are scheduled to take place in Parkersburg from Sept. 6-8.

Sunday’s schedule includes six meetings.

Meetings set for Monday will start up with a review of the state’s finances following the most recent fiscal year. Lawmakers will also discuss the current conditions and staffing in the state’s regional jails and state prisons on Monday.

A Tuesday morning meeting will focus on transportation issue including speeding in work zones with Contractors Association of West Virginia Executive Director Jason Pizatella.

West Virginia Parkways Authority Executive Director Jeff Miller is set to appear before the committee to update members on the operations of the West Virginia Turnpike.
