Carbon monoxide leak sends dozens of West Virginia hotel guests to hospital
At least three people were in critical condition with carbon monoxide poisoning Sunday after a gas leak in a West Virginia hotel sent 68 people to the hospital, local authorities said.
The leak was reported at 2 a.m. Sunday, Braxton County officials told WOWK-TV. They worked to identify the source of the leak as emergency responders took more than five dozen guests to Braxton Memorial Hospital for evaluation and treatment. Fire marshals swept the building with carbon monoxide detectors, WCHS-TV reported, and the business had reopened by late Sunday afternoon.
The incident took place at the Microtel Inn and Suites, a subsidiary of Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, in Gassaway, W. Va. The company did not immediately respond to a Daily News request for comment.
More than 20,000 people end up in the ER with carbon monoxide poisoning annually in the U.S., and 200 of them don’t make it, Newsweek noted.
