Washington DC Silver Line opens to Dulles Airport and Ashburn

WASHINGTON Metropolitan Space Transit Authority (WMATA) introduced into service on November 15 the 18.2km extension of the Silver Line from Wiehle-Reston East to Dulles Worldwide Airport and Ashburn in Loudon County, Virginia.

Constructed at a price of $US 3bn, the extension provides six new stations to the Washington DC metro community, at Reston City Middle, Herndon, Innovation, Dulles Worldwide Airport, Loudoun Gateway and Ashburn.

The alignment has been constructed primarily within the median of the Dulles Worldwide Airport Entry Freeway and Dulles Toll Street, and all stations are on the floor besides Dulles Worldwide Airport which is elevated.

The opening to Dulles Worldwide Airport and Ashburn marks the completion of Part 2 of the Dulles Hall Metrorail undertaking, which has been undertaken by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA).

MWAA says {that a} rail connection between Dulles and the centre of Washington DC has been deliberate because the airport opened in 1962.

Part 1 of Dulles Hall Metrorail opened on July 26 2014 and runs for 18.7km from East Falls Church to Wiehle-Reston East, serving 4 intermediate stations at McLean, Tysons Nook, Greensboro and Spring Hill.

Development of Part 2 started in 2014 below a design-build contract awarded to the Capital Rail Constructors three way partnership of Clark Development Group and Kiewit Infrastructure South. The contract included programs, observe and stations.

A rolling inventory upkeep facility has been constructed on Dulles Airport property by Hensel Phelps below $US 253m contract awarded by MWAA on August 4 2014.

Development of Part 2 has been accomplished 4 years late and $US 250m over funds, in response to The Washington Submit.
