Feb. 21 (UPI) — On this date in historical past:

In 1848, The Communist Manifesto was revealed by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels.

In 1878, the New Haven, Conn., Phone Co. revealed the primary telephone listing. It listed 50 subscribers.

In 1885, the Washington Monument, a 555-foot-high marble obelisk inbuilt honor of America’s revolutionary hero and first president, was devoted in Washington.

In 1916, Germans launched the Battle of Verdun. Greater than 1 million troopers within the German and French armies have been killed in almost 10 months of preventing. It was the longest battle of World Battle I.

In 1925, the primary challenge of The New Yorker was revealed.

In 1934, Nicaraguan guerrilla chief Cesar Augusto Sandino was killed by members of the nation’s nationwide guard.

In 1953, Francis Crick and James D. Watson found the double helix construction of the DNA molecule. It took one other three a long time for scientists to provide a transparent, direct image of the DNA molecule.

In 1965, Black Muslim chief Malcolm X was assassinated at a rally in New York.

In 1972, Richard Nixon grew to become the primary U.S. president to go to the Individuals’s Republic of China.

In 1994, longtime CIA counterintelligence officer Aldrich Ames and his spouse, Maria, have been arrested and charged with promoting data to the Soviet Union and Russia. Ames was sentenced to life in jail; his spouse obtained a five-year time period.

In 1995, a Russian fee estimated as much as 24,400 civilians died in a two-month rebellion within the separatist republic of Chechnya.

In 2007, nuclear neighbors India and Pakistan signed a treaty in New Delhi aimed toward stopping the unintentional use of atomic weapons.

In 2014, U.S. President Barack Obama met the Dalai Lama, Tibet’s exiled religious chief, on the White Home after the Chinese language authorities warned the assembly would harm U.S.-China relations. A White Home assertion stated Obama “reiterated the U.S. place that Tibet is a part of the Individuals’s Republic of China and that the US doesn’t assist Tibet independence.”

In 2019, the Japanese Area Company’s Hayabusa-2 probe touched down on asteroid Ryugu.

In 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered “peacekeeping” troops into two separatist areas of japanese Ukraine beneath new decrees recognizing them as unbiased republics. Three days later, Russia invaded Ukraine.
