DC crime: Howard University tightens security protocols after mob attack

A pair of physical altercations in and around the campus of Howard University has prompted the Washington, D.C., school to issue new security protocols to protect students.

The ramped-up security comes after a recent incident in which a group of Howard University students were assaulted by a roving group of teenagers who had been seen around different regions of the city engaging in illegal behavior. According to 7 News, at least one student was stabbed near the university dorms on Monday morning. The incident took place after another altercation near the campus that did not involve any students.

During a town hall Tuesday, university president Wayne Frederick announced that the university would be implementing a strict ID check for residence halls and other buildings that are only open to students, faculty, and staff. The school also announced there would be an increased security presence on campus.

“The safety and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff are our primary priority,” Frederick said in a statement. “We are committed to continuing dialogue on this critical issue and sharing timely and consistent information.”

The latest assault comes amid growing concerns about crime in the nation’s capital that has increasingly found its way onto college campuses throughout the city.

Last month, a man was shot and killed on the campus of the Catholic University of America following a robbery attempt. Another shooting took place near the campus came less than two weeks later. The university and Washington police held a safety walk last month following the incidents and increased police presence in the area.
