The Governor of Maryland is congratulating the University of Lynchburg baseball team on their first-ever Division 3 National Championship after the Hornets defeated Johns Hopkins.

In a video posted on Twitter, Governor Wes Moore explains he had a wager with his press secretary over who would win the championship. Moore says he was rooting for his alma mater, Johns Hopkins University, while his press secretary, Carter Elliot, is a U of L alumnus.

After the 7-6 defeat, Gov. Moore donned a University of Lynchburg shirt to fulfill his end of the bet.

“I’m a man of my word. Congratulations, national champs,” Moore said. “And I’m congratulating you because what you did is not simple. Being a champion takes work. Being a champion takes a sacrifice. And frankly, being a champion means you had to work really hard and get it done together. And so the whole country celebrates you, even everyone here in Maryland.”

Moore also said an individual congratulations to Hornets freshman pitcher, and Maryland native, Logan Tapman.

“Logan Tapman, congratulations, hometown boy,” Moore continued. “We are proud of you here. And for each and every one of you, celebrate this time and enjoy it. And when you graduate, come to Maryland.”
