Here we go again, another election cycle, brings yet another political action committee that’s trying to “turn Texas blue.”

It’s been 34 years now since a Democrat won a statewide race in Texas with the late Governor Ann Richards winning in 1990. And yet, every election year (and let’s face it, when isn’t it an election year?) somebody comes along intending to shift Texas from Republican to Democratic rule.

This time, it’s the Texas Majority PAC, backed by billionaire George Soros. But it’s hardly the only one out there. And it’s hardly the first time anyone’s tried to “flip the script,” as it were, in the Lone Star state.

In the audio above, we seek historical context from Raul Ramos, Associate Professor of History at the University of Houston, in conversation with Houston Matters producer Garrett Bohlmann. Then, Houston Matters host Craig Cohen discusses the current political climate with Party Politics co-host and University of Houston Professor of Political Science Brandon Rottinghaus.
