Texas A&M hires Sean Spencer as new DL Coach

We learned on Sunday afternoon that Texas DL Coach Elijah Robinson would be leaving the team to become the defensive coordinator at Syracuse, and the roster impact was swift, as the Aggies lost a DL commit from the 2024 class (Gabriel Reliford) and a current DL player to the transfer portal (Walter Nolen). However, it looks like Mike Elko was equally swift in finding Robinson’s replacement, as just hours later, we have reports from several outlets that the Aggies will hire Sean Spencer as their new DL Coach.

Nicknamed “Coach Chaos,” Spencer has more than a decade of experience coaching defensive line at the Power 5 level, including two SEC schools. His first Power 5 job came under James Franklin at Vanderbilt, who he followed to Penn State, where he was for six years. Spencer then spent two seasons in the NFL as the DL Coach for the New York Giants before returning to the college ranks to join Billy Napier’s staff two seasons ago. He was let go less than a week ago following Florida’s disappointing 5-7 2023 season.

While he was in State College, PA, Penn State finished with 40 or more sacks in FOUR straight seasons. For comparison, Texas A&M has finished a season with 40+ sacks only twice since joining the SEC (2017 and 2023).
