South Carolina Republican government officials call Trump indictments ‘ridiculous’

SOUTH CAROLINA (WPDE) — Government leaders across the Palmetto State like Governor Henry McMaster, Senator Lindsay Graham, and Congressman Russell Fry are sharing their thoughts on Donald Trump’s latest legal battle.

All of the Republican representatives said they support the former president.

As Donald Trump is facing 37 charges, some including violations of the Espionage Act, these South Carolina Republican officials are going public with their reactions.

Senator Lindsay Graham tweeted on June 11 Trump may have done things wrong, but also called the charges “ridiculous.”

His tweet said:

Whether you like Trump or not, he did not commit espionage. He did not disseminate, leak or provide information to a foreign power or news organizations to damage this country.

Governor Henry McMaster shares the same mindset as Graham.

When asked about his thoughts on the charges on Friday, he said, “Here we are again, and I don’t think anybody’s surprised. I think it’s unfortunate. I think it’s a dark day. I think President Trump will overcome it, as he has the other allegations against him. I have never seen such nonsensical prosecutions and allegations.”

Next to McMaster, Trump endorsed Congressman Russell Fry and said he’s also remaining loyal to the former president.

“I think it’s ridiculous that we’re even in this situation, but here we are,” Fry said. “It’s the first time unfortunately that this has ever happened in our country.”

As Trump faces conviction, ABC15 asked Congressman Fry if he would still vote for him in the 2024 election, even if he’s found guilty.

Congressman Fry responded and said:

I think president Trump was a consequential president. He did a lot of good, his policies were sound and in every which way the American people flourished, and did well under his administration; so we’re going to continue to support him in those policies and return this country back to where it needs to be.

A campaign spokesperson confirmed to ABC News that Trump will continue to run for president, even if he is convicted.
