Man dies in fiery crash involving three vehicles on I-85S in Cherokee Co.
CHEROKEE COUNTY, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – The Cherokee County Coroner’s Office said one person is dead after a fiery crash involving three vehicles on I-85 south on Wednesday evening.
According to the coroner, the incident occurred at the 96 mile marker at around 6:56 p.m.
Officials said a tractor-trailer rig traveling north in the construction zone struck a guard rail on the right side of the road and went over the concrete barrier wall separating the north and south bound lanes.
The driver of a Nissan Rogue Sport was traveling south on I-85 when the tractor-trailer rig collided with the Nissan and another tractor trailer that was also traveling south, officials say.
The coroner said the driver of the Nissan was trapped inside the vehicle. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.
The coroner identified the driver as 73-year-old Donald Charles Harwood.
As of 10:37 p.m., all lanes are still blocked on I-85 south as crews continue working the scene.
“While some sections of I-85 are much better with the opening of those with 6 lanes, others that remain under construction still pose a danger to motorists traveling through Cherokee County. This is yet another victim of an ill-fated construction nightmare,” said Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler.
