H.S. boys volleyball becomes sanctioned sport in South Carolina

On Tuesday afternoon, the South Carolina Excessive College League made a landmark choice to sanction the game of boys volleyball as an official varsity sport. 

The choice to sanction boys volleyball was unanimously authorized by the SCHSL Executive Committee 12-0, through the committee assembly’s part of the SCHSL Government Committee assembly that started Tuesday morning.

As a part of the choice, the game will start varsity competitors in fall 2022. In response to a post on Twitter from the SCHSL, the primary state championship is not going to be held till the 2023-24 season. Groups competing below the SCHSL will play within the fall, the identical season as ladies volleyball.

The SCHSL didn’t reply to a voicemail asking for remark as of Tuesday afternoon.

The Palmetto Volleyball Affiliation helped placed on a state-wide postseason event this spring between 16 colleges from throughout the state.

Woodmont, Eastside, Hillcrest, Dorman and Boiling Springs we’re among the many colleges that competed. Woodmont defeated Dorman, 3-0, to win the state title, which was not sanctioned by the SCHSL. The ultimate 4 of the event was performed at Cardinal Newman in April.

“I by no means envisioned it, to occur within the state of South Carolina,” Woodmont membership boys volleyball coach Darren Rizzitello informed The Greenville Information. “And for it to have a unanimous vote … I can not wait to share this information with lots of people.”

Boys volleyball started as a membership sport in 2019. That 12 months, solely 14 groups below the SCHSL had it. This previous season, 20 groups competed and 17 have been related to colleges that compete below the SCHSL.

“I’m extraordinarily grateful that boys volleyball is lastly sanctioned,” Dorman membership boys volleyball coach Drew Copeland informed The Information on Tuesday. “I hope that is the perfect factor for the game shifting ahead.”
