With the UN C football season just six days away from kicking off in a college game day match up against South Carolina. Let’s take a dip into our video vault to another big matchup between the heels and Gamecock. 1988. The very first game Matt Brown coach to Carolina. Here’s Jay Jennings story from that game in Columbia. Ok. Yeah, stadium, that cockpit can be a very intimidating place, especially for a freshman quarterback like Des May. The North Carolina offense sputtered for most of the evening. Meanwhile, a game quarterback Todd Ellis comes out firing, he hits Karl Platt who breaks a tar heel tackle and scores to make it 10 0 UC. Second quarter. Blue coach Matt Brown resorts to some razzle dazzle Randy Merit scoots 43 yards in the reverse to cut it to 10 7. Here’s the turning point of the game. Ellis engineers a beautiful drive with time running out in the first half, Harold Green dives over from short yards. 17 7 game cocks at the half. South Carolina dominates the second half. Green scores once more and rushes for 100 yards. Even the heels do manage a hand Green field goal in the fourth quarter but Ellis isn’t finished. He gets Ken Watson for an eight yard touchdown. A very frustrating night for you and seeing his debut under Matt Brown. We’re disappointed we came in here wanting to win the ballgame. Shoot, we’re on side kicking late. We’re trying to do anything we can do to have a chance to get back in the thing. It just shows how much character we have and how much unity we have and we’re never gonna give up South Carolina. 31 North Carolina 10 in Columbia, South Carolina, Jay Jennings.
