Eviction record sealing bill advances in South Carolina
COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) — A measure to seal eviction records after five years is gaining momentum in South Carolina, as lawmakers unanimously voted to send the bill to a full committee for review.
Supporters argue that the bill is crucial amid a shortage of affordable housing in the state.
During a session at the State House, lawmakers heard testimonies from individuals who shared how eviction records have created barriers in their lives.
Tee Joseph, a testifying witness, highlighted the severity of the issue, stating,
We’ve had 600,000 evictions in South Carolina since 2020.
Joseph urged lawmakers to make a change, emphasizing the housing crisis.
Bailey Byrum from the SC Tenant Union added,
One bad month can send you into the ether of having an eviction for the rest of your life.”
Other witnesses described how eviction records forced them into unsafe housing situations.
State Rep. Carla Shuessler, leading the initiative, said,
To have safe and affordable and healthy housing is a big deal.”
The bill now awaits debate in the full House Judiciary Committee, though the timeline remains uncertain.
