While much of Oklahoma experienced single-digit temperatures early Tuesday morning, they did not match the record lows that the state has experienced according to records going back to before statehood.
It was still bitterly cold, though. According to the Oklahoma Mesonet station in east Oklahoma City, the temperature dipped below 1 degree just before sunrise on Tuesday.
What is Oklahoma City’s lowest recorded temperature?
The official lowest temperature ever recorded in Oklahoma City came early in the city’s life. On Feb. 12, 1899, the air temperature plummeted to -17 degrees Fahrenheit. It took over a century for OKC to record the second-lowest record temperature of -14, which came during the arctic blast of February 2021.
On this specific day, Jan. 21, the all-time record low is -3 degrees, according to Weather Underground.
The coldest monthly average temperature on record in Oklahoma City was in January 1930. According to the National Weather Service, low temperatures in OKC that month would dip below zero several times over a span of two weeks, sometimes reaching 9 degrees below zero.
Coldest state record was set in NE Oklahoma
Oklahoma City is usually spared the coldest temperatures that the state has to bring.
The coldest day on record in the Sooner State happened just 14 years ago in Nowata, which is a small city north of Tulsa.
On Feb. 10, 2011, Nowata reached -31 degrees, setting the state’s all-time record low temperature. Less than six months later, Nowata experienced two 111-degree days, which is a 142-degree swing in a single year.
Is 2025’s cold weather season over?
While the single-digit temperatures are gone for this week, there’s no guarantee it will stay that way.
In the meantime, however, OKC residents will be able to enjoy more seasonal temperatures over the next week. According to the National Weather Service in Norman, the high each day this week will stay mostly in the 40s with a couple of days reaching 50 degrees. The nights will dip below freezing.
There is a slight chance that a renewed cold front could push temperatures down again with some freezing precipitation later this weekend, but dry conditions will return by Monday.
