Oklahoma City Police are investigating the city’s 58th homicide of the year. The shooting happened late Sunday night following a community event on the northeast side of Oklahoma City.

In the summer, Kindred Spirits hosts Sunset Sundays, a community event to say cheers to a new week.

“It’s an opportunity for small businesses to set up and sell things, an opportunity for up and coming musicians to be heard, you know there’s always a live band playing,” Jabee Williams said.

Williams with LiveFree OKC said it’s a place for people of all ages and Sunday night someone disrespected that.

“It frustrates me because we work so hard to create a peaceful space here on 23rd,” Williams said.

Oklahoma City Police said there was a shooting near the event as it was ending.

“A person there was apparently trying to sell cigars out of a booth when he got into an altercation with someone else at the scene. At some point the other person pulled out a gun and shot and killed the victim.” Msgt. Gary Knight said.

No arrests have been made.

“We believe there were lots of witnesses. It was a block party type situation, so a lot of people probably heard or saw what was going on,” Msgt. Gary Knight said.

Williams said what happened is part of a bigger issue which is why he started a community violence intervention program.

“There is something in our lives whether it’s trauma, whether it’s lack of resources. There are things that we have to address in our community to make sure these types of things don’t happen,” Williams said.

He wants to see a reduction of gun violence in his community.

“What happened last night isn’t something we should be getting used to,” Williams said.

Police said if you have any information to give Crimestoppers a call at 405-235-7300.
