Oklahoma DB Mykel Patterson-McDonald to enter transfer portal

The days of keeping in-state talent in the state after high school, letting them develop and become icons in the program, are long gone.

Oklahoma defensive back Mykel Patterson-McDonald said Saturday he planned to enter the transfer portal when it opens next week.

“First, I would like to say thank the man above, my family, The University of Oklahoma staff and coaches for giving me a chance to find a home, my teammates, and everyone that supported me,” Patterson-McDonald wrote on social media. “I look forward to see what the future holds for me with that being said I will be entering my name into the transfer portal with 4 years of eligibility remaining.”

Patterson-McDonald did not play a snap during his only season with the Sooners in 2024. He arrived at OU as a four-star recruit from Westmoore and the No. 7 player in Oklahoma.

He’s the second portal departure for the Oklahoma Sooners this spring. Tight end Davon Mitchell announced his entry to the portal last week. Though players can declare their intentions, the spring transfer portal officially opens on Wednesday, April 16.

The Oklahoma Sooners are expected to be active in the transfer portal, but safety may not be a position they address. Oklahoma has a really good blend of experience, talent, and youth at safety led by Robert Spears-Jennings.
