Teen killed when hole dug into sand dune collapses in North Carolina

A 17-year-old boy was buried alive underneath a number of toes of sand after the partitions of a gap and a dune collapsed on him on a North Carolina seashore.

The unidentified teen, who had been visiting Cape Hatteras Nationwide Seashore close to Frisco from Chesapeake, Virginia, grew to become trapped in a gap on Saturday (6 Could). Seashore rangers responded to the scene round 2pm after receiving a number of 911 calls in reference to the incident, the Nationwide Park Service stated.

“Previous to arriving on scene, household and pals went searching for {the teenager} and located him buried underneath a number of toes of sand, apparently brought on by parts of the adjoining dune collapsing into the opening,” the assertion learn.

Relations on the scene and park rangers carried out CPR on the teenager with out success. He was pronounced useless on the scene.

Investigators decided {that a} gap had been dug in a back-dune space “behind the first dune and never seen from the beachfront,” in line with the Information & Observer. It’s unclear who dug the opening.

“Cape Hatteras Nationwide Seashore affords our condolences to his household and pals,” David Hallac, a superintendent at Nationwide Parks of Jap North Carolina, stated.

“We urge guests to not dig deep holes on the seashore as a result of hazard they current to beachgoers and emergency response employees.”
