Jenkins, Wake Forest stars lead MLB draft picks from North Carolina :: WRALSportsFan.com
The Wake Forest baseball team, which ranked No. 1 for much of the season and reached the semifinals of the College World Series, produced eight picks in the first six rounds of the Major League Baseball Draft.
South Brunswick High outfielder Walker Jenkins went No. 5 overall to the Minnesota Twins on Sunday night. The 20-round draft concludes Tuesday.
Wake Forest pitcher Rhett Lowder, the team’s ace and the ACC Male Athlete of the Year, went seventh overall to the Cincinnati Reds. Wake Forest third baseman Brock Wilken was picked No. 18 overall in the first round by the Milwaukee Brewers.
NC State’s first pick was third baseman Gino Groover in the second round to Arizona. North Carolina outfielder Mac Horvath was selected in the second round by Baltimore. Duke second baseman Jay Beshears was taken in the sixth round.
MLB sorts players from the state where they were drafted from, so it’s possible former North Carolina prep athletes who played college ball out of state are not included on the list.
