A hiker died over the weekend in a fall at a scenic overlook in North Carolina.

The National Parks Service said rescue crew were dispatched Saturday afternoon around 12:15 p.m. to the Glassmine Falls Overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway, about 25 miles northeast of Asheville.

The vantage point offers a view of the waterfall and is on a steep cliff.

A woman’s body was recovered from the scene, where she succumbed to her injuries following the 150-foot fall.

She was identified as Nancy Sampson, 61 years old, of Greer, S.C.

First responders from Reems Creek Fire Department rappelled down the cliff and — with assistance from Mt. Mitchell State Park Rangers and a Trauma Intervention Program of Western North Carolina volunteer — recovered Sampson’s body.

“We are glad that one of our volunteers was able to support a family member on scene. The distraught family member lives out of state and was alone following the tragic incident,” the Trauma Intervention Program said on social media.

The NPS did not offer any other details.

“Seeing the waterfall requires a bit of luck … as this ephemeral falls only flows after periods of rain. During drier weather it will slow to a trickle or even dry up completely,” according to the NPS website.
