Abortion in North Carolina: Now, and after the November 2022 elections :: WRAL.com
North Carolina at present has a 20-week ban, which implies somebody can get an abortion as much as 5 months right into a being pregnant.
ON HULU AND THE WRAL APP ON YOUR TV OR STREAMING DEVICE. >> THE U.S. SUPREME COURT’S ABORTION REALLY FRIDAY LEAVES IT UP TO STATES TO REGULATE THE PRACTICE THAT MAKES THE NOVEMBER STATE LEGISLATIVE RACES HERE. EVEN MORE IMPORTANT. WRAL, STATE GOVERNMENT REPORTER TRAVIS FAIN JOINS US TO TALK ABOUT WHAT’S NEXT ON THIS ISSUE WITH NORTH CAROLINA TRAVIS. SO IT’S JUST A REFRESHER PEOPLE. WHAT IS THE LAW RIGHT NOW IN OUR STATE? SO WE HAVE A 20 WEEK BAN ON THE BOOKS RIGHT NOW. IT’S AS YOU CAN GET AN ABORTION UP TO 5 MONTHS INTO THE PREGNANCY. >> AFTER THAT LOSS IS NO ABORTIONS UNLESS THERE’S A MEDICAL EMERGENCY THAT HASN’T BEEN ENFORCED. THAT BECAUSE IT’S BEEN BLOCKED BY A FEDERAL LAWSUIT WITH THIS NEW SUPREME COURT DECISION. WE EXPECT THAT 20 WEEK BAN TO GO BACK INTO EFFECT. I DON’T KNOW THE EXACT TIMING. ATTORNEY GENERAL JOSH STEIN’S OFFICE IS REVIEWING THE LEGAL STEPS HERE. REPUBLICAN LEADERS ARE PRESSING HIM TO GET THAT PROCESS MOVING OTHER THAN THAT, I DON’T EXPECT ANY CHANGES THIS YEAR. WE HAVE A REPUBLICAN CONTROLLED GENERAL ASSEMBLY. WE HAVE A DEMOCRAT IN THE GOVERNOR’S OFFICE WHO IS THE TOTAL PORTION RESTRICTIONS IN THE PAST. THAT’S GOING TO KEEP THE STATUS QUO ONCE THAT 20 WEEK BAN GOES BACK INTO EFFECT FOR THIS YEAR DRIVERS WE HEARD FROM PRO CHOICE ADVOCATES THAT VOTING IS SO IMPORTANT. SO WHAT ABOUT THE NOVEMBER ELECTIONS? HOW BIG OF AN ISSUE WILL BORE SHUNS BE? >> I THINK IT WILL PROBABLY BE THE NUMBER ONE ISSUE AND STATE LEGISLATIVE RACES THIS NOVEMBER. YOU KNOW, IN CONGRESS. >> THE COMMENT MIGHT BE A BIGGER ISSUE, BUT THERE’S ONLY SO MUCH THE STATE LEGISLATURE CAN DO ON THE ECONOMY. BUT ON ABORTION, THEY HAVE JUST ABOUT ALL THE DECISION-MAKING RIGHT NOW. YOU KNOW IT WITH THIS SUPREME COURT DECISION. ALL 170 GENERAL ASSEMBLY SEATS ARE UP. IF DEMOCRATS WIN A MAJORITY THAT ALMOST CERTAINLY CLOCK CODIFIED PROTECTIONS FROM ROE VERSUS WADE. THAT’S REALLY UNLIKELY. WE EXPECT REPUBLICANS TO MAINTAIN MAJORITIES. THEY’RE GOING FOR A SUPER MAJORITY THAT WOULD LET THEM PASS LAWS OVER GOVERNOR ROY COOPER’S VETOES. NOW THAT HAPPENS STARTING IN JANUARY. YOU YOU’D EXPECT TO SEE NEW ABORTION RESTRICTIONS TO MOVE DOWN HERE AT THE LEGISLATURE. JUST WHAT THAT WOULD LOOK LIKE KIND OF REMAINS TO BE SEEN. PHIL BERGER, THE SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER, HAS SAID REPEATEDLY THAT HE’S ASKED REPUBLICAN SENATORS TO TO THINK PRETTY DEEPLY ABOUT WHAT THESE LAWS OUGHT TO LOOK LIKE. BUT AGAIN, WE’VE GOT AN ELECTION TO GET THROUGH BEFORE WE CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT CHANGES ARE EVEN POS AFTER ROE V WADE WAS OVERTURNED. WE HEARD FROM HOUSE SPEAKER TIM MOORE SAYING CLEARLY THIS WILL BE BROUGHT
