NWS confirms 2 tornadoes touched down in Mississippi over weekend

JACKSON, Miss. (WAFB) – Two confirmed tornadoes touched down in Mississippi over the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

The tornadoes developed during strong storms on the evening of Saturday, February 14, into the early morning hours of Sunday, February 15.

Officials with the National Weather Service said an EF-1 tornado impacted the south side of Centreville in Wilkinson County. The tornado had a path of about seven miles long and had peak winds of 90 miles per hour.

A second EF-1 tornado was confirmed near Peoria in Amite County, Mississippi. According to the National Weather Service, the tornado stayed on the ground for about two miles and had peak winds of 90 miles per hour.

Following the strong weekend storms, thousands of power outages, downed trees, and some structural damage were reported across parts of Louisiana and Mississippi.

Officials and residents living in Wilkinson County, Amite County, Ascension Parish, East Feliciana Parish, and Tangipahoa Parish said they had at least some minor damage.
