OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (WLOX) – Saturday morning, many runners braved the cold temperatures at the 36th annual YMCA Kelsey Williams Winter Classic.

The race is dedicated to a high school student named Kelsey Williams, who died battling epilepsy. Mississippi Gulf Coast YMCA CEO Jara Miller says they’re proud to bring awareness to the condition.

“It is a life-altering and even dangerous condition that a lot of people have, but not a lot of people are necessarily aware of it,” explains Miller. “So, this event helps honor [Williams’] memory and bring awareness to epilepsy and helps us raise funds for that.”

Organizers say they saw a record number of racers this year, but not all of those who registered showed up due to the cold weather.
