HPD recognized at 2024 Mississippi Public Safety Summit for saving baby’s life

FLOWOOD, Miss. (WDAM) – A Hattiesburg police officer was recognized for saving a baby’s life and honored Wednesday at the 2024 Mississippi Public Safety Summit.

Hattiesburg Police Department Lt. Joe Kennedy was one of two law enforcement officers to receive recognition with a “First Responder of the Year Award.”

Kennedy was recognized for his life-saving emergency medical care to a baby at a restaurant in Petal on Jan. 23, 2023.

Gov. Tate Reeves, Attorney General Lynn Fitch, and Commissioner of the Mississippi Department of Public Safety Sean Tindell presented this year’s Governor’s Public Safety Awards.

The Public Safety Awards recognize those who were outstanding in their efforts to serve and protect residents across the state.

Kennedy and Flowood Police Department Officer Will Brantley were both designated as First Responder of the Year.

Brantley came to the aid of a choking baby while on shift in his patrol car on Oct. 6, 2023.

“Let me say this as clearly as possible,” Reeves said. “Lt. Kennedy and Officer Brantley are both heroes. Their actions saved the lives of two babies.

I’m incredibly thankful that God placed good men such as Lt. Kennedy and Officer Brantley in the right place at the right time. Their actions forever changed the lives of those children, as well as their families. That will never be forgotten, and our entire state is grateful to them.”

The winners of the safety awards are selected by Reeves based on candidate nominations by their peers in the public safety realm.

State Games of Mississippi Softball Tournament

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – The State Games of Mississippi continue throughout the weekend with several events taking place throughout the Queen City.

The youth softball tournament was held at the Northeast Softball Complex.

Kids of all ages around the area came out to compete in the tournament, but most importantly, Saturday’s event was to help grow their love of the game.

“Well, a lot of these girls don’t get to play tournaments, so this is kind of their first experience for a lot of them. So they’re getting that tournament experience and maybe some of them will go on to, you know, be tournament team players and get out there and play at a little bit higher level,” said Softball Commissioner, Sonja Rowell.

On top of this weekend being an awesome opportunity for these players, the tournament also brings in visitors from around the area, which boosts the local economy.

“It brings in so many people. It brings in people from all the areas, they come in, they stay in our hotels, they eat in our restaurants, they spend money here, which boosts our local economy,” said Marketing Director for the State Games of Mississippi, Amanda Bratu.

Gold and silver medals were handed out after Championship games were played.

Jerry worked at Cumberland’s Body Shop most of his adult life. He loved hunting, fishing, dirt track racing, camping, and being outdoors. Jerry loved his family and the love of his life, his wife, Carol Gray.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Velton and Lillie Mae Gray; brother, Danny Gray; sister, Sheila Gray Henry; brother-in-law, Steve Bridges; paternal grandparents, Odell Gray and Winnie Cook; maternal grandparents, Earl and Cammie Byrd.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Jones Gray; son, Michael Dickey (Deidra); daughters, Dawn Gray, Cherie Overby (Jeffrey) and Brittany Miller (Rob Elmore); grandchildren, Hunter Pope, Kory Gray, Kannon Magee, Abbigail Pope, Mayleigh Pope, Sawyer Overby, Waylon Overby, Chloe Miller, Layla Miller, Scarlet Miller and Hunter Dickey; brother, Odell Gray (Kim); sister, Lynn Bridges; aunts, Brenda Brandon (Jerry)and Betty Carolyn Bland; a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Pallbearers will be Levi Gray, Hunter Pope, P`nut Kennedy, Kevin Kennedy, Joe Boyle, and Joseph Boyle.
