South Alabama has added former Mississippi State defensive back Wesley Miller out of the NCAA transfer portal.

Miller, a 5-foot-10, 185-pound safety from Columbus, Miss., has four seasons of eligibility remaining. A three-star recruit in the 2022 signing class, he redshirted for the Bulldogs last season and did not appear in a game.

With Miller and offensive linemen Lucas Taylor and Reed Buys, South Alabama has now added three former Mississippi State players to its roster since the end of the 2022 season. Jay Hopson, formerly high school relations director at MSU, was hired as the Jaguars’ cornerbacks coach in January, while former USA head coaches Joey Jones and Steve Campbell now work on the Bulldogs’ staff.

Miller has not publicly announced his commitment to South Alabama, but is among four new Division I transfers now listed on the team’s online roster. He joins Taylor, quarterback Bishop Davenport (Utah State) and linebacker Gavin Forsha (Kansas State) as the Jaguars’ post-spring portal additions.

South Alabama added four Division I transfers in January: running back Kentrel Bullock (Ole Miss), offensive linemen Buys and Jordan Davis (South Carolina) and wide receiver Javon Ivory (Memphis). All participated in spring practice, though Ivory was limited by injury.

South Alabama returns plenty of experience at safety, though the team’s top four players at the position include a pair of fifth-year seniors (Keith Gallmon and Jalen Jordan) and two fourth-year juniors (Yam Banks and Jaden Voisin). The Jaguars also have several younger players in the mix, including former Kentucky transfer Rickey Hyatt and 2022 freshman Tremel States-Jones.

South Alabama has also added the majority of its incoming recruiting class to the online roster, a group that includes safety Cole Blaylock (UMS-Wright), tight end Trent Thomas (Cottage Hill Christian), wide receiver Anthony Eager (McGill-Toolen) and defensive lineman Jordan Norman (Hoover). Quarterback Gio Lopez (James Clemens) was the lone freshman to enroll in January and participate in spring practice.
