In what officials are calling a “mass casualty,” at least 19 people are injured after a massive car crash in Jones County.
According to WDAM, the crash happened Wednesday around 6:30 a.m. near the U.S. 84 intersection with Ben Pitts Road. The Jones County Sheriff’s Department confirmed to the TV station that 20 vehicles were involved, including multiple semi-trailer trucks. An overturned log truck was also part of the incident.
Of the 19 injured, 10 were transported via ambulance to South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel. Medical personnel assisted the nine who refused ambulance service. No fatalities have been reported.
While traffic slowly returns to normal operations in the area, the Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the incident. Officials are encouraging drivers to use alternative routes for the time being.
