JACKSON, Miss. (WLOX) – The Strengthen Mississippi Homes Program is asking Mississippians in the lower six counties interested in having their properties considered for mitigation grant assistance to fortify roofs to the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety Fortified Roof Standard to complete an interest form.

The Mississippi Comprehensive Hurricane Damage Mitigation Fund was established during the 2024 Legislative Session with oversight by the Mississippi Insurance Department.

Qualified dwellings may be eligible for grants of up to $10,000 to assist residential property owners in retrofitting their properties to make them less vulnerable to hurricane damage and be eligible for a reduction in premium.

“The SMH Program is an important step in stabilizing the insurance market in Mississippi, especially in the lower six counties, and seeking a long-term funding solution during the 2024 Legislative Session is critical to the success of the program,” Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney said.
