Philanthropist Ken Griffin donates $50M to University of Miami’s Sylvester Cancer Center

MIAMI – A billionaire philanthropist has made a $50 million donation to the University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The university announced the donation from Ken C. Griffin, CEO of Miami-based hedge fund Citadel LLC., on Tuesday.

The generous donation would be used for a the new 12-story, 244,000-square-foot Transformational Cancer Research facility at the Miller School of Medicine’s Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Sylvester recently renewed its designated National Cancer Institute designation, the only one of its kind in South Florida. It became one of 72 cancer centers nationwide to hold the distinction in 2019.

The gift is part of the University’s Ever Brighter fundraising campaign.

The facility will be renamed the Kenneth C. Griffin Cancer Research Building and is expected to open next year.
