Heat at Magic picks and predictions

Prediction

Magic 109, Heat 105

Moneyline

BET MAGIC (-104).

The Heat beat the Magic in Orlando by 9 earlier in the season, but Miami shot 52% from deep while Orlando shot just 25%. That likely won’t be repeated Sunday.

Orlando is 12-6 ATS at home, and with the moneyline and spread so close, that figure should give Magic bettors hope. Orlando is 6-3 straight up as a home underdog, the 3rd-best winning rate in that situation in the NBA. Miami has lost 2 straight and is 2-4 straight up on the road over its last 6 away games.

Back MAGIC (-104).

Against the spread

PASS.

Orlando has been solid at home when an underdog, so back it on the moneyline over the slightly different spread.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 214.5 (-110).

Neither team plays at a fast pace, and both teams have a strong defense. The Heat have gone Under in 5 straight games and have scored less than 100 points in 3 of those 5. They are 18-24 O/U on the season. The Magic have scored 100 or fewer in 4 of tier last 6 games and are 1-5 O/U in those 6. Orlando is 19-23 O/U on the season.

The Magic rank 5th in defensive rating with Miami 10th. Both teams are in the bottom half of the league in offensive rating. Expect a defensive-minded game. Back UNDER 214.5 (-110).

Inter Miami – St. Louis City SC summary: goals, score, highlights | MLS

Inter Miami and St. Louis City played out a thrilling 3-3 draw at Chase Stadium, a game that will go down as one of the best of the MLS season to date.

The visitors were never likely to be cowed but they exceeded all expectation with a daring, front-foot display kick-started by a stunning opener from Chris Durkin, spinning to fire home form the edge of the box. Soon after Lionel Messi levelled things with an equally clinical strike on 25 minutes but that was just the start.

Former Heron Indiana Vassilev nudged his side back ahead with five minutes of the first half remaining. Then it was Miami’s turn as Messi, Jordi Alba and finally Luis Suarez combined in a sweeping attacking move, the Uruguayan finishing coolly at the back post.

The pace slowed slightly in the second half but St. Louis remained a threat and took a deserved lead on 68 minutes when Suarez nodded into his own net from a corner kick. Inter Miami pushed for a leveller but were frustrated by Roman Burki, who made a string of good saves.

Finally, however, the Herons were level when Jordi Alba latched onto a clever through-ball from Julian Gressel and beat the impressive Burki from close range.

No farewell victory for Messi as he prepares to leave for Copa America, but fond memories for those who witnessed a six-goal thriller in South Florida.

Rangers’ Jose Urena: Early exit in Miami

Urena (1-5) took the loss Friday, giving up four runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks over 2.1 innings as the Rangers fell 8-2 to the Marlins. He struck out one.

An error by Marcus Semien in the third inning did Urena no favors, but the right-hander also wasn’t fooling anyone, managing only five swinging strikes among his 65 pitches before getting the hook. Urena is on his fifth team in four seasons since leaving Miami after the 2020 campaign, and while he sports a solid 3.74 ERA and 1.34 WHIP through 45.2 innings for Texas this year, his 5.61 ERA and 1.59 WHIP over the prior three seasons suggest regression is coming. If he gets another turn through the rotation, Urena lines up for a home start next week, either Wednesday against the Tigers or Friday against the Giants.
