Ft. Lauderdale Officials Say 'Public Should Be Cautious' After Apparent Tornado Blows By

MIAMI, FL — A tornado apparently blew past Fort Lauderdale near Las Olas and the Intracoastal late Saturday afternoon, City of Ft. Lauderdale officials said.

There are no reports of injuries, and crews are assessing the damage, which appears to be minor.

“The public should be cautious of any debris and downed power lines in the area,” the statement said.

Videos posted on X, showed power flashes and debris as the tornado moved east toward the Atlantic Ocean, and radar images indicated a severe thunderstorm had a strong tornado signature just before 6 p.m., Channel 10 reported.

A tornado warning was issued for the area at 5:46 p.m. by the National Weather Service.

The agency told Channel 10 staffers received multiple calls and social media reports of a tornado near Federal Highway and it was moving northeast toward Las Olas Boulevard.

A strong winter storm system and its associated cold front moving through the Tampa Bay region earlier in the day, bringing an extended period of heavy rain, can be attributed to the severe weather in the region on Saturday, the outlet reported.
