EDGEWATER, MD — A shark was seen swimming at Beverly Beach in Edgewater on July 22.

Officials don’t have enough information to confirm the species.

“Shark sightings are not uncommon in the Chesapeake Bay, and 41 shark species have been documented in Maryland waters,” the Maryland Department of Natural Resources said on Instagram. “These sharks are mostly off the Atlantic coast, but are sometimes in the Bay and its tributaries.”

The DNR noted that shark bites are rare, but warned swimmers to get out of the water if they see a fin.

“It’s important to keep your distance if you see what you think could be a shark,” the DNR said. “Stay out of the water, and only try to fish for the shark if you know what you’re doing.”

Only some sharks can legally be fished, but they require a catch card and landing tag. Those regulations are set by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas.

The DNR said fishers should follow the motto “If you don’t know, let it go.”

Anybody who spots a possible shark should email the details, photos and videos to customerservice.dnr@maryland.gov.
