MD Man Stored Blasting Caps In Basement, Reported By Ex-Wife

WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD — A Washington County man is facing multiple charges after authorities said he stole explosive devices from his employer and stored them in his basement.

Stephen K. Thompson, 48, was arrested Monday after his estranged wife contacted the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal and told investigators she found “suspicious items” in their home’s basement, according to an agency news release.

Bomb technicians with the agency went to the home, located the devices and determined they were blasting caps, authorities said. Blasting caps are devices used to detonate explosives, according to the agency.

“However, these devices pose an imminent threat to public safety, property, and the environment in the wrong hands,” the fire marshal’s office said in a statement. “The potential consequences of their illicit use can be catastrophic, leading to severe injuries, loss of life, and extensive property damage.”

After further investigation, authorities determined Thompson stole the blasting caps from his employer, who uses them in their fire suppression system.

Thompson was charged with eight counts of manufacturing and possessing an explosive device, one count of possessing explosives without a license and theft, authorities said.

Thompson is currently being held at Washington County Detention Center without bond.
