FREDERICK, MD — Frederick is one of Money’s 50 Best Places to Live in the U.S. for 2024.
“This year’s Best Places to Live list celebrates cities and towns where a thriving economy meets affordability, diversity and an exceptional quality of life,” according to the publication. “Backed by rigorous research and data-driven analysis, these 50 places are the blueprint for the future.”
For Frederick — which has a population of about 82,1750, a median listing price of $460,000 and an unemployment rate of 1.90 percent — the publication noted the area’s strong economy, vibrant art scene and “Top Chef” dining options.
The historicy city’s solid business footing is due in large part, to its proximity to the nation’s capital and to Baltimore (both about 50 miles away) and the large employers that call the city home (like Fort Detrick, a U.S. Army installation, and the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research).
“This Eastern Seaboard city has a rich local identity that extends far beyond its economic pull. Residents enjoy access to a 50-block downtown historic district with more than 200 shops, art galleries, restaurants and a public art trail. When families go out to eat, they’re spoiled with choice — local favorites include aka Friscos, Isabella’s and Thacher & Rye, the newest outpost from “Top Chef” alum (and Frederick resident) Bryan Voltaggio,” the publication reported.
“Craft beer enthusiasts can wind down at Attaboy Beer, which has a dog-friendly garage, or Milkhouse Brewery. North Market Pop Shop, which lays claim to the largest selection of bottled sodas on the East Coast, is a great kid-friendly option,” according to Money.
Frederick is the only Maryland city that made the list.

April McClain Delaney, the Democratic nominee and former Commerce Department official, has won the race for Maryland’s 6th Congressional District.
The 6th District, which includes Allegany, Garrett, and Washington Counties in western Maryland, plus Frederick County and part of Montgomery County, was the state’s most competitive House race for 2024.
Delaney’s campaign was focused heavily on abortion rights, a key issue for Democrats across the country.
To that end, McClain-Delaney’s campaign rolled out ads assailing Parrott’s past votes against strengthening spousal rape laws and pro-choice efforts, and citing her four daughters as her inspiration for getting into the race.
Meanwhile, Parrott centered his message on the economy and inflation.
He received major support from the House Freedom Caucus and its new leader, Rep. Andy Harris, who is currently the sole Republican member of the Maryland congressional delegation.
The Associated Press is now projecting that April Delaney has won the U.S. House seat for Maryland’s sixth district.

EUGENE — A row of five white motorcoaches idled outside Autzen Stadium late Saturday night, waiting to facilitate a trip unlike any other for the Maryland Terrapins football team.
There would be a 20-minute ride to the Eugene airport. Then a five-hour charter flight across three time zones. Then an early-morning motorcoach ride to College Park, Maryland.

The Oregon Ducks lead the Maryland Terrapins on Saturday night at Autzen Stadium, and the officiating crew has made some questionable penalty calls that extended drives for the Maryland offense. The Ducks have 70 penalty yards so far. It was a rough start on special teams for the Ducks as well.
Lanning: “We Can Be A Lot Better”
The Oregon Ducks took a 21-10 lead into the half against the visiting Maryland Terrapins. Even with the double-digit halftime lead, Ducks’ coach Dan Lanning was adamant that the Ducks can be much better in the second half. He spoke to Big Ten Network’s Brooke Fletcher after the first half.
“We can be a lot better. We’re not playing clean right now,” Lanning said. “To our standard, we’ve got a lot more left in the tank that we can go attack right now into halftime.”
The Ducks have had penalties to extend multiple Maryland drives. Lanning and the Ducks will try to start fresh in the second half.
“It’s a new quarter, it’s a new game right now,” Lanning said. “We get he opportunity to have the ball at the half, and we have the opportunity to be aggressive and take advantage of that.”
Oregon has not faced much adversity of late, so learning how to bounce back from these mistakes could be a good thing moving forward.
Ducks Making Careless Mistakes
On the opening drive of the game, the Ducks forced a Maryland three and out. While Maryland was punting on fourth down, Oregon roughed the Maryland punter, giving the Terrapins an automatic first down. Maryland ended up driving for a field goal on that drive.
The Ducks had their own three and out to start the game. Oregon had a bad punt off the side of punter Ross James’s foot and only traveled 32 yards.
Luckily for the Ducks, their defense stepped up and forced a three-and-out. However, on the punt, the Ducks muffed it and got lucky to retain possession.
This would not be the last mistake Oregon would make. On the lone Maryland touchdown drive in the first half, the Ducks committed multiple drive-extending penalties. Oregon defensive back Tysheem Johnson committed some questionable defensive pass interference penalties to keep the drive going. There was also a facemask called on the Ducks’ defensive lineman Derrick Harmon during a sack.
