Former Washington Commanders Owner Dan Snyder Cuts $14 Million From Price of Maryland Home

The Potomac, Maryland, mansion belonging to former Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder is now $14.1 million cheaper.

Now asking $34.9 million, the 30,000-square-foot residence is still the most expensive listing in the Washington, D.C., suburb, according to listing records. And while it once reigned as the priciest listing in the entire metro area, it’s now in second place behind a $50 million, newly built home in McLean, Virginia.

Synder, 58, first listed the mansion, inspired by an 18th-century French château, in February for $49 million. Completed in 2004, it was a collaboration between architect John Ike, interior designer Geoffrey Bradfield and Horizon Builders, according to the listing with Michael Rankin and Heather Corey of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty. They did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Part of the property was purchased from the estate of Jordan’s King Hussein and Queen Noor in 2001 for $8.64 million, according to property records. Since then, Synder has acquired a number of adjacent parcels of land, bringing the estate to a total of 15 acres, the listing said.

The main house offers a foyer with coffered ceilings and a 24-foot limestone fireplace leading to the double-height living room with views of the Potomac River. It connects to the dining room and library, as well as a balcony with water views. There’s also a chef’s kitchen, a breakfast solarium, a gym, a spa, an office, a mahogany-paneled club room with a wet bar and billiards, a wine cellar and home theater, the listing said.

There are five bedroom suites, with the primary suite encompassing the entire third floor. The estate also includes a two-bedroom guest house with a spiral staircase, a kitchen and living and dining rooms, a gate house, a six-car garage and a manager’s house.

The home is surrounded by manicured lawns and English gardens.

Synder—the founder of Snyder Communications, a marketing company that he sold for $2.5 billion in 2000—owned the Commanders from 1999 until earlier this year, when he sold the team to a group led by private-equity titan Josh Harris for $6 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal. Harris is the co-founder of Apollo Global Management and also co-owns the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers.

NFL owners unanimously approved the sale, then immediately fined Snyder a record $60 million fine after investigating and corroborating a woman’s allegations of sexual misconduct. Another former employee claimed the team improperly withheld approximately $11 million that should have been shared with the league’s 31 other teams. The fine follows a 2021 levy of $10 million following a prior investigation into the team’s hostile workplace, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Representatives for Synder did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
