As No. 2 Syracuse prepare for No. 1 Maryland, college lacrosse is finally available on Kalshi in NY
It’s the scenario every Syracuse lacrosse fan dreams of: the Orange are ranked No. 2; the hated Maryland Terrapins are No. 1; the JMA Wireless Dome will be rocking on Friday night.
Usually, for New York residents, this is where the excitement hits a regulatory wall. State gaming laws strictly prohibit betting on in-state college teams, meaning you cannot open FanDuel or DraftKings and place a wager on the Orange to snap their eight-game losing streak against the Terps.
However, there is now a legal, federally regulated exception available in New York: Kalshi.
Because Kalshi operates as a financial exchange regulated by the CFTC (Commodity Futures Trading Commission) rather than a state-licensed sportsbook, it can offer markets that are otherwise restricted in New York. For the first time, fans in Syracuse can legally put money on the Orange, and just in time for the biggest lacrosse game of the (young) season.
The “Revenge Game” Market: Syracuse vs. Maryland
The stakes couldn’t be higher. While Friday night features a battle between the nation’s top two teams, for Syracuse fans, it is about exorcising demons. The Orange have lost eight straight games to the Terrapins dating back to 2009, but no loss was more painful than their last meeting at the Dome in 2024.
In that overtime thriller, Syracuse appeared to have won the game when Michael Leo found the back of the net with 1:12 remaining. However, officials waved off the goal for a crease violation, stunning the JMA Wireless Dome crowd. Maryland immediately marched down the field to score the game-winner, turning a potential Syracuse celebration into one of the most gut-wrenching defeats in recent memory.
If you believe this is the night the Orange finally flip the script and snap the streak, the Kalshi market is currently offering an opportunity to back Syracuse as a slight underdog.
Prices and payouts for Syracuse vs. Maryland lacrosse on Kalshi:
Kalshi prices fluctuate in real-time as more people trade, just like a stock. As of Wednesday evening, here’s where things stand:
- Syracuse (Yes): Trading at 47¢.
- What this means: The market gives Syracuse a roughly 47% chance to win. These prices fluctuate in real-time as more people trade, just like a stock.
- Maryland (Yes): Trading at 54¢.
- What this means: The market currently views the Terps as the favorite with a 54% chance to win.
How to calculate payouts:
Unlike moneyline odds (like +110 or -130), Kalshi contracts are binary. They pay out $1.00 if the event happens and $0.00 if it doesn’t.
- The Trade: If you buy 10 Syracuse contracts for 47¢ and the Orange win, you receive $10.00.
- The Profit: That is a 53-cent profit per share, which is roughly equivalent to +112 odds—a solid return for a team playing at home in the Dome.
Lacrosse National Championship futures: Syracuse, Maryland, and more
Perhaps the most interesting data comes from looking beyond Friday night. Kalshi also hosts a market for the Division I Men’s College Lacrosse Championship, and the traders there are significantly more bullish on Syracuse than the traditional Vegas sportsbooks.
We compared the current Kalshi prices to the odds at major national sportsbooks (which are visible but not bettable in-state for NY college games). The difference in how the Orange are viewed is staggering.
| Team | Sportsbook Odds | Kalshi Price (Cost to Buy) | Implied Odds Equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Princeton | +800 | 26¢ | +285 |
| Maryland | +500 | 25¢ | +300 |
| Syracuse | +650 | 25¢ | +300 |
| Virginia | +2000 | 25¢ | +300 |
| Richmond | Not listed in Top 12 | 23¢ | +335 |
| Duke | +1600 | 17¢ | +488 |
| North Carolina | +750 | 15¢ | +566 |
| Notre Dame | +900 | 14¢ | +614 |
| Georgetown | +1100 | 14¢ | +614 |
| UAlbany | Not listed in Top 12 | 11¢ | +809 |
Traditional oddsmakers have Syracuse sitting at +650, giving them only about a 13% chance to win the title. However, the prediction market on Kalshi has bid Syracuse up to 25¢, effectively giving them a 25% chance to hoist the trophy.
On Kalshi, Syracuse is essentially a co-favorite alongside Princeton and Maryland. The “crowd” trading on the exchange believes the Orange are twice as likely to win the title as the Vegas bookmakers do. Since New Yorkers cannot access those +650 futures anyway, Kalshi represents the only legal way to invest in a Syracuse title run.
