BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Looking for something fun to do this weekend? The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) is hosting its annual Free Fishing Weekend on June 8-9.

According to LDWF, residents and visitors will be able to fish in Louisiana waters without a fishing license during this weekend event.

“Each year we designate a weekend of fishing with no need to purchase a fishing license as an incentive for families and friends to enjoy one of our states most beloved pastimes,” explained LDWF Secretary Madison Sheahan. “Please take this opportunity to make memories with your loved ones, and introduce them to the great sport of fishing.”

While the license is waived for the weekend, officials stress that all fishing regulations—including size, season, catch limits, and great restrictions—still apply.

LDWF still requires a Recreational Offshore Landing Permit (ROLP) during Free Fishing Weekend for select fish, including tunas, billfish, swordfish, amberjacks, groupers, snappers, hinds, cobia, wahoo, dolphinfish, and gray triggerfish. To register for a ROLP, click here and choose “Free Fishing Weekend” option for the license type. Anglers can skip the “LDWF Fishing License Number” field.

Anyone interested in continuing fishing throughout the year can purchase a fishing license here.
