Louisiana Tech baseball beats Northern Colorado in Bears’ season opener

The Northern Colorado baseball team scored in the first inning of its season opener Friday, but Louisiana Tech scored three in the third and fifth innings to defeat the Bears 9-3 at J.C. Love Field in Ruston, Louisiana.

Senior first baseman Caden Wagner singled in Austin Bunn with one out in the first inning to bring in the Bears’ first run of the season. Wagner had two hits with the RBI. He picked up his second single of the day in the top of the third — following a single by his brother, sophomore shortstop Kai Wagner.

Kai Wagner later scored in the third on a fielder’s choice groundout by Carson Gross. Kai Wagner had two hits and scored two runs.

Bunn added a hit with his run scored. Jackson Romero had a hit and an RBI.

Will Safford hit a solo home run for Louisiana Tech in the Bulldogs’ three-run fifth inning.

The teams play a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday and one game starting at noon Sunday.

UNC was 11-34 overall in 2023 and 8-16 in the Summit League.
