Jeff Landry leads in Louisiana gubernatorial race amid lawsuit against Biden: Poll

Republican Attorney General Jeff Landry holds a large lead over other GOP candidates in the race for the Louisiana governorship.

A poll from Kaplan Strategies showed Landry gathered 30% from those surveyed in a head-to-head matchup with other Republican candidates and the only Democratic candidate, Shaun Wilson, who received 22%.

The five other GOP contenders all fell in the single digits, and the only independent candidate earned 5%. With the Louisiana gubernatorial election approaching in October, the poll shows that 24% of voters are still undecided.

Landry received an endorsement from President Donald Trump in his race for governor, putting him in a favorable position for the Republican Party hoping to flip the role held by Gov. John Bel Edwards (D-LA), who is wrapping up his final year.

Landry launched his bid in the highly anticipated gubernatorial race in October 2022. The new favorable poll numbers come amid an expected final ruling in a lawsuit against the Biden administration filed by Landry and Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey. The suit alleges collusion with social media platforms to suppress speech.

U.S. District Judge Terry Doughty issued a preliminary injunction on Tuesday prohibiting many federal agencies and the Biden administration from communicating with social media companies about specific content.

In 2022, the attorneys general of Missouri and Louisiana brought a case against the Biden administration, claiming it violated the First Amendment because it “significantly encouraged” and “coerced” social media platforms to conceal protected free speech posted on platforms.

While Doughty, a Trump appointee, has not issued a final ruling in the case. He wrote in the preliminary injunction that the Republican plaintiffs will likely be successful “on the merits in establishing that the Government has used its power to silence the opposition.”

Doughty then listed several topics that he deemed were suppressed due to opposition: COVID-19 vaccines, COVID-19 masking and lockdowns, the. COVID-19 lab leak theory, the validity of the 2020 election, President Joe Biden’s policies, policies of the government officials in power, and the validity of the Hunter Biden laptop story.

The Justice Department sent a notice to appeal the federal court ruling that blocked Biden administration officials from communicating with social media companies on Wednesday.

The top two candidates for Louisiana governor in the October open primary will advance to the Nov. 18 runoff, regardless of party. Based on recent polls, those candidates are expected to be Landry and Wilson.
