BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – As part of Black Maternal Health Week, recognized each year from April 11-17, the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Mu Sigma chapter, hosted an event Sunday, April 14, at the Louisiana State Capitol.

The event, “Honor Her Life”, was free, informative, and family-friendly. The aim was to raise awareness for Black maternal health while honoring women who have lost their lives in childbirth or from complications afterward.

In Louisiana alone, Black women are four times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than white women.

Local organizations say everyone can play a role in working to prevent these deaths and improving maternal health care.

Guests for the event included Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome, Chief Judge John Michael Guidry of the 1st Circuit Court of Appeal, as well as individuals sharing personal testimonials.

Along with a Bubble Release Memorial, the event included Black maternal health programs and a resource fair with local vendors.
