French language exhibit opens in Jennings
JENNINGS, La. (KPLC) – The community was invited to hear from language activists dedicated to revitalizing Louisiana’s heritage.
The Council for the Development of French in Louisiana’s (CODIFIL) “Louisiana French: Preserve and Evolve” exhibit opened in Jennings Thursday night.
Organizers said the exhibition was held to demystify Louisiana French and Louisiana Creole and the way these languages have shaped the state.
“What I’d really like people to walk away with is this idea that it is possible to learn your ancestor’s language, to learn your grandparents or your great-grandparent’s language,” said Community Development Specialist Marguerite Justus. “You can do that as a change in your life. I want them to both see it on the big picture of things, you know, developing Louisiana and things like that, but also on the- on the personal picture and -and say like, ‘It’s not too late for me. I could learn this.’”
The exhibition heads next to Abbeville.
