Kentucky State Police preparing to improve safety on eclipse day
HENDERSON, Ky. (WFIE) – As the total solar eclipse approaches in just a few weeks, Kentucky State Police officials say they anticipate somewhere in the ballpark of 150,000 people commuting to the Henderson County area for the eclipse.
They are specifically looking at the Highway 41, Twin Bridges area. KSP Trooper Corey King says with all of that traffic, there’s a greater chance of being involved in some sort of wreck.
With that, King says they’ll have troopers staged on both sides of the bridge as well as EMS and wrecking crews. The goal is to keep traffic moving, even in the event of a wreck or large stoppage.
“That’s the whole goal, is to ensure that these bridges here remain open,” he tells us. “To the motoring public, that’s important to know that if there is an issue on these bridges that we have resources at ground zero to make sure that those bridges are open and they can get home as safely and as fast as they can.”
Trooper King says if you’re planning on being on the roads at all during the eclipse, it’s probably in your best interest to be prepared for a significantly increased commute-time.
