Campground along Kentucky River sustains major flood damage

CAMP NELSON, Ky. (WKYT) – Some Kentuckians are just now getting a good look at the damage left behind by the flooding.

A northern Garrard County campground and RV park took significant damage. Some say it’s the most damage they have seen in over 50 years.

The Kentucky River crested at 46.8 feet and is now dropping. The damage on the Garrard County-Jessamine County line is extensive. Some people could get their campers moved, but others were not.

Stationary structures were either washed away or inundated with floodwater. The office for the RV camp was washed away, with nothing but blocks left to see. That part of the campground is still under water, but the water has receded enough to begin the process of cleaning up.

The bathhouse is still underwater, and you can barely tell a swimming pool was ever there.

“What it looks like now, what you are seeing now looks relatively calm, but what you understand is that pickup truck over there was completely under water, that house trailer is pushed at a 45-degree angle compared to what it was,” said owner Kenny Embry.

Garrard County emergency officials worked to help people evacuate this area on Friday morning. Some of the campers are still up the hill, and others are parked just above where the river crested.

No one was injured in the flooding.
