LIHWAP utility payments: Direct payments of $200 or $300 for Georgia residents

Georgia residents who need help with water bill payments can apply for federally funded support through the Low Income Household Water Assistance Program, or LIHWAP.

The program was created for economic relief during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring households can pay for water in their homes.

How can I apply?

Georgia residents who want to see if they qualify for the assistance must schedule an appointment through their local Community Action Agency. Residents can email LIHEAP-CSBG-LIHWAP@dhs.ga.gov or visit http://www.georgiacaa.org to find out which agency covers their local area. What are the eligibility requirements?

Customers must meet a handful of eligibility requirements, including having their water supply come from a registered vendor for the LIHWAP program with the Department of Human Services. Other qualifiers include having a total gross income at or below 60% of Georgia’s median income guidelines. Applicants must also be a U.S. citizen or lawfully permitted immigrant.

How much money will LIHWAP take off my water bill?

Household size, income, and composition are all factors determining how much money applicants will see taken off their utility bills. Households with a past due amount will be provided either a $200 or $300 benefit toward the current bill. Households without a past due bill may also see a $200 or $300 payment.

What is the deadline?

Applications opened for Georgia residents on Nov. 1, 2021, and payments began rolling out in 2022.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, states have until Dec. 31 to liquefy the LIHWAP funds, meaning grant recipients must liquidate or expend funds by this deadline.
