ATHENS, Ga. — Leighton Finley was laboring in the first inning against Vanderbilt on Friday night. After retiring the leadoff man, Finley allowed a walk and a single, but he managed to escape unscathed by inducing a fielder’s choice and a flyout.

Between innings, Georgia coach Wes Johnson told Finley that he didn’t think his sophomore righthander “was dominating [his slider] with the proper finger.” And Finley took that observation to heart.
