Georgia DOT reviewing speed limits on four dangerous Decatur streets
DECATUR, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – The Georgia Department of Transportation is taking action to slow down speeding drivers. The initiative follows multiple, sometimes deadly pedestrian crashes in Decatur.
According to our partners at Decaturish.com, GDOT is evaluating four streets, including College Avenue, Scott Boulevard, South Candler Street, and Clairemont Avenue.
Since last November, seven people have been hit by cars near downtown Decatur. In one instance, four people were hit at the intersection of East College Avenue and Commerce Drive on Nov. 6, 2023. Three were injured and one person died.
People who live and work in the area say speeding drivers have been a long-standing problem.
GDOT is also considering changes to pedestrian crosswalks. For example, at the intersection of College Avenue and Candler Street, there is talk of installing a pedestrian scramble where all vehicle movement would be stopped and only pedestrians could cross.
No timetable has been set yet on when these changes, both speed and crosswalks, would be implemented.
