ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Dangerous heat continues in north Georgia today, and it’s sticking around through the middle of the week.

A Heat Advisory is in effect for most of the region through Sunday evening, with the exception of the northeast Georgia mountains.

Today will be the hottest day of the weekend, with heat index temperatures reaching 105 degrees during the afternoon hours.

This is not a day to be outside longer than necessary. If you must be outside, take frequent breaks in the air conditioning, drink plenty of water, and watch for signs of heat exhaustion.

What to Expect Through Wednesday

The dangerous heat pattern will continue every day through Wednesday. Each afternoon, you can expect:

• Heat index temperatures near or above 105 degrees.
• Pop-up storms developing between 2 p.m. and sunset.

While these afternoon storms may provide some temporary relief, they could also bring gusty winds and heavy downpours in isolated areas.

When Relief Arrives

The pattern finally breaks Thursday. You’ll notice slightly cooler highs in the low 90s — still hot, but more manageable than what we’re seeing this weekend. Rain chances also increase to 40% Thursday, which could help cool things down further.

Safety Tips During the Heat Advisory

• Stay hydrated: Drink water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
• Limit outdoor activities: If you must go outside, do so early in the morning or after sunset.
• Check on vulnerable neighbors: Elderly residents and those without air conditioning are at higher risk.
• Never leave children or pets in vehicles.
• Reschedule outdoor plans if possible, or move them to early morning or evening hours.
