A warming trend is likely in South Georgia this week
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) – Tonight: A trough is pushing through the region this evening and reinforcing the cold air we have across Southwest Georgia. High pressure still settling across the region along with a few high-level cirrus clouds will keep temperatures from dropping to freezing tonight. However, we will be close to it with lows in the middle to upper 30s. Some patchy frost will be possible through early Monday.
President’s Day: High pressure will finally settle into the area for the holiday. Temperatures will also rebound slightly as clear skies and dry air move into the region. High temperatures will climb toward the low 60s. Despite the slightly warmer highs for the day, we are going to see cold lows overnight due to clear skies and calm winds. Lows will fall toward freezing and slightly below it for a few areas. Make sure to protect pets, plants, and pipes.
Tuesday: Back to work we go, but after a cold start, temperatures will rise a little higher in the 60s. Sunshine will be in abundance across the region. We could even be slightly warmer during the night as well.
The rest of the week: We are holding on to the warming trend. Temperatures will climb from the upper 60s into the mid-70s by the end of the week. Something else to take note of will be a chance for showers on Thursday night into Friday morning. A cold front is forecasted to move through the region, but rain chances are low for now.
The Weekend: We are dry, sunny, and back in the 60s to kick off the weekend. However, temperatures will not stay down for long because signs of warmer weather are back by next week.

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech’s Christo Lamprecht, the world’s top-ranked amateur player, has been named one of three finalists for the 2023 Ben Hogan Award presented by PNC Bank. The joint announcement was made Tuesday by the Hogan Trophy Award Foundation, the Friends of Golf (FOG) and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).
Determined by voting from the award’s esteemed selection committee made up of more than 30 leaders in collegiate, amateur and professional golf, Auburn freshman Jackson Koivun and Vanderbilt junior Gordon Sargent also were named finalists Tuesday.
Lamprecht sits atop the World Amateur Golf Ranking, is second in the PGA TOUR University rankings and sixth in the National Collegiate Golf Ranking System. He won the 2023 Amateur Championship and claimed the Silver Medal as the low amateur at the 151st Open Championship (T-74). The South African competed in 2024 Masters Tournament, was a member of the International Team at the 2023 Arnold Palmer Cup, and also competed at the 2023 World Amateur Team Championship, placing eighth.
Collegiately, he won the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational and was co-medalist at the 2023 Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational. Additionally, Lamprecht shared second place at the Watersound Invitational and tied for third at this spring’s ACC Championship. Overall, he owns a 69.11 stroke average with six top-10 finishes in 10 events and no placements outside the top 16.
Last week, Lamprecht was named the winner of the 2024 Byron Nelson Award, which is awarded to the nation’s top senior golfer based on four years of accomplishment on the golf course, academic performance and service to the community. He also is a semifinalist for the Fred Haskins Award.
Christo Lamprecht was named recipient of the Byron Nelson Award last week, recognizing his four-year career of success on the golf course, in the classroom and service to the community. He is the fifth Tech player to win the award.
The three Ben Hogan Award finalists will attend a black-tie dinner Monday, May 20, at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, where the winner will be crowned as the Charles Schwab Challenge week kicks off.
The Ben Hogan Award presented by PNC Bank has honored the outstanding amateur collegiate golfer at Colonial Country Club since 2002. Prior to its move to Fort Worth, the original Ben Hogan Trophy, which was awarded based on a different list of criteria, was issued at Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles beginning in 1990.
Recipients of the Ben Hogan Award presented by PNC Bank have combined to accumulate 85 worldwide victories, including 64 PGA TOUR wins, and have amassed more than $395 million in prize money on the PGA TOUR. Additionally, the group has appeared in 17 Ryder Cups and a dozen Presidents Cups.

EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) – Students at Effingham College and Career Academy getting recognized for their efforts in introducing a new bill.
The school’s fall zoology class noticed Georgia does not have a designated state crustacean.
Students then landed on recommending the Georgia White Shrimp after conducting research and voting.
Speaker of the House Jon Burns came to the school Monday to celebrate the passing of House Bill 1341 recognizing these shrimp as the state’s official crustacean and acknowledging students’ efforts in making it happen.
“We’re blown away by these young people who have taken this initiative and have engaged in democracy. They worked hard, they studied hard, they made some real good decisions.”

2 Georgia lawmakers on Israel-Hamas conflict
Two state lawmakers with families in the Middle East are weighing in on the conflict between the two nations. State Rep. Ruwa Romman is the only Palestinian-American in the Georgia General Assembly. State Rep. Esther Panitch is the only Jewish-American lawmaker at the State Capitol.

Both have family in the conflicting Middle East. Both say something must be done, but they have very differing opinions on what that “something” should be.
“All of this has been very personal,” said Rep. Romman.

Romman’s family lives in the West Bank, about a two-hour drive from Gaza.
“I cannot begin to explain the heartbreak we have been feeling,” she said.
War in the region has claimed the lives of thousands of Palestinians and launched a humanitarian crisis.
“I have been getting daily text messages from community members who have said I’ve lost this many family members,” she told FOX 5. “Just constant announcements of family members missing, dead, starving.”
Roman told FOX 5 she believed Israel has been committing genocide.
“Every university in Gaza has been destroyed,” she said. “Every hospital has been damaged or destroyed. Homes of people have been destroyed.”
Rep. Panitch said there’s another side to that war.
“There are rockets that still come into Israel from the north and from the south, from Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza,” she told FOX 5.

Panitch’s family lives in southern Israel.
“They’re very stressed,” she said.
Israel has bombarded Gaza for months in response to the Hamas surprise attack that killed more than 1,400 Israelis on Oct. 7.
“Israel is defending itself,” she said.
Panitch says Hamas committed genocide when it attacked Israel.
“Hamas went after civilians in Israel indiscriminately. They killed, they raped, they took hostages and butcher in the most vile of ways,” Panitch said.
Both state lawmakers want peace. But, they differ on how to get there.
“I want Hamas to give back the hostages. I want them to surrender. Because that’s how wars end, with one party surrendering. Hamas cannot be allowed to stay in power. They need to be stopped, they need to be eradicated and Israel should not stop until that’s done,” Panitch said.
“We need to see an immediate, permanent ceasefire. We need to condition weapons to Israel because the government is not being responsive to our asks. And we need a flood of humanitarian aid,” Romman said.
